Should you apply to an MBA during COVID-19?
Uncertainty is tough. In fact, research shows that it is even more stressful than negative outcomes.
That initially surprised me, but I read that the reason has to do with neuroscience and our need for control. It’s human nature.
Over the course of twenty years in working in MBA admissions, I’ve observed that far too many talented professionals ‘undersell’ themselves in the application because of those uncomfortable feelings of uncertainty. Some avoid applying to a more competitive school. Others avoid applying at all.
Of course, it’s not easy to make plans during a global health crisis, but I take this advice to heart from a Forbes’ article on how to make a decision in times of uncertainty.
“Remember that as you get more information, you can always adjust and make another decision. But keep moving forward instead of being paralyzed by uncertainty and fear.”
In other words, take action because that will make you feel more in control. And know that you can still make changes as you go along.
For instance:
You can sign up for a virtual information session. But that doesn't mean you have to apply.
You can start an application. But that doesn't mean you have to finish it.
You can submit an application. But that doesn't mean you have to enroll.
Even taking small steps, such as following a business school's Instagram page, can make you feel more secure about the future.
